"Racism's still alive"

Professor Ngugi wa Thiong'o, a prominent Kenyan thinker, writer, and academic (currently a professor at UC Irvine) is subjected to humiliating, racist treatment at Hotel Vitale in San Francisco. You can read the story below on Black Look's blog. Another fellow KBW blogger Majonzi also wrote about this incident titled "When Appearance Matters." The Sunday Nation also has an article on this.

What you can do: spread the story and contact the hotel to express your anger and outrage. And obviously, boycott the Hotel Vitale!!

@Majonzi,
great minds think alike, ama? I'll check out your blog. This situation is despicable, unfortunately it is more common than not. The US is not the bastion of democracy and liberation that it claims to be.

tis a shame to humanity for anyone to treat another in an unbifitting manner!

I do agree that racism is still alive and well but on the other hand Ngugi wa Thiongo looks a senior mungiki adherent everytime I see him. Dude needs to style up but even so it in no way justifies what happened to him.

I cannot believe that happened in San Francisco of all places.

@Quintessence,
There's a minimum standard of conduct required when interacting with any human being, no matter what biases one has.

@Acolyte,
These days, racism isn't always so blatant. Employees ( especially in the States) should know that even executives and famous well-to-do people often go around dressed very casually (or even look a bit eccentric) so you can't tell by just looking at them.

@Princess,
Oh yeah, if it can happen in the bastion of liberalism where there's constantly a protest against anything mainstream, then it can happen anywhere.
